Burnout Doesn’t Look the Same for Everyone


When we hear the word burnout, we often picture someone who is stressed, exhausted, overworked and desperately in need of a holiday.


But burnout can be much more than feeling tired.


And importantly, burnout doesn’t always look the same in a neurotypical person as it does in someone with ADHD, Autism or AuDHD.


For some people, burnout means feeling emotionally drained and losing motivation.

For others, it can feel as though their entire system has shut down.

They may struggle to think, communicate, tolerate noise, interact with people or complete everyday tasks that they previously managed without difficulty.


Understanding these differences matters, because telling someone experiencing significant neurodivergent burnout to simply “take a break” or “get some rest” may completely underestimate what is happening.


What does general burnout look like?

Burnout is commonly associated with prolonged periods of stress and insufficient opportunity for recovery.


Someone experiencing burnout may notice:


  • Physical and emotional exhaustion

  • Reduced motivation

  • Irritability or becoming more emotional

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Sleep changes

  • Headaches or muscle tension

  • Feeling overwhelmed by normal responsibilities

  • Becoming disconnected from work or other people

  • Reduced productivity

  • Feeling like even small tasks require enormous effort


Sometimes the person continues functioning remarkably well on the outside while feeling completely depleted underneath.

Eventually, however, the body and brain can start saying, “I can't keep doing this.”


ADHD Burnout: When the Brain Has Been Running Too Hard for Too Long

ADHD burnout can have another layer.

Living with ADHD can require enormous amounts of invisible effort.

Planning. Remembering. Organising. Regulating emotions. Managing time. Starting tasks. Finishing tasks. Filtering distractions. Trying not to interrupt. Trying to appear organised. Trying to meet expectations designed for a different type of brain.

Then there is masking — continually trying to hide or compensate for ADHD traits so that others don't see how difficult things actually feel.


Over time, the mental load can become exhausting.

ADHD burnout may look like:

  • Profound physical and mental fatigue

  • Brain fog and difficulty thinking clearly

  • Executive functioning becoming significantly harder

  • Forgetfulness and difficulty making decisions

  • Losing the ability to initiate even simple tasks

  • Increased emotional dysregulation

  • Irritability or tearfulness

  • Headaches and physical tension

  • Increased sensitivity to noise, light, touch or busy environments

  • Needing considerably more downtime

  • Withdrawing from people

  • Struggling to communicate when overwhelmed

  • Losing interest in things that normally provide enjoyment

  • Feeling physically depleted or “heavy”


For some people, the exhaustion can become so significant that it can feel similar to chronic fatigue or widespread pain conditions. Fatigue is recognised as a significant issue for some adults with ADHD, but persistent or severe physical symptoms should never automatically be attributed to ADHD or burnout — other medical causes need to be considered.


Autistic Burnout: When Capacity Can Dramatically Reduce

Autistic burnout can be particularly debilitating.

It is increasingly described as a state of profound exhaustion associated with the cumulative demands of navigating environments and expectations that don't adequately accommodate autistic needs.

Constant sensory input, social demands, masking, communication demands, changes in routine and continually adapting to a predominantly neurotypical world can all contribute.

During autistic burnout, a person's capacity can significantly decrease.

Things they could previously manage may suddenly feel impossible.

They may experience:

  • Extreme physical and mental exhaustion

  • Increased sensory sensitivity

  • Much lower tolerance for noise, lights, crowds or touch

  • Reduced ability to communicate

  • Periods of being unable or finding it extremely difficult to speak

  • Increased need for solitude

  • Difficulty socialising or engaging with others

  • Increased shutdowns or meltdowns

  • Reduced executive functioning

  • Difficulty completing everyday activities

  • Needing significantly more predictability and routine

  • Feeling overwhelmed by decisions

  • Loss or reduction of previously manageable skills

For some people, this isn't something that disappears after a quiet weekend.

Recovery may take weeks or considerably longer, particularly when the demands that contributed to the burnout remain unchanged.

And Then There Is AuDHD

For someone who is both autistic and has ADHD, burnout can become even more complex.

One part of the brain may crave novelty, stimulation and activity while another desperately needs predictability, reduced sensory input and recovery.

You might want connection — but have no capacity for conversation.

You might desperately want to accomplish things — but be unable to initiate them.

You might have hundreds of ideas racing through your head while simultaneously feeling physically unable to act on any of them.

This internal push and pull can be exhausting in itself.

Burnout Isn't Always Obvious

One of the biggest misconceptions about burnout is that someone experiencing it will simply stop functioning.

Many don't.

They keep working.

They keep parenting.

They keep caring.

They keep answering emails.

They keep smiling.

They keep saying, “I'm fine.”

Until they can't.

This is particularly important for people who have spent years becoming very good at masking their difficulties.

Recovery Isn't Just About Rest

Rest is important, but meaningful recovery often requires looking at what continually drains the person's capacity.

That may mean reducing demands, creating sensory-friendly environments, building genuine downtime into life, improving sleep, asking for support, setting boundaries, reducing masking where it feels safe, regulating the nervous system and recognising personal warning signs much earlier.

Most importantly, we need to stop measuring everyone's capacity against the same benchmark.

A person experiencing neurodivergent burnout may temporarily need fewer demands, less conversation, more solitude, greater predictability or significantly more recovery time.

That isn't laziness.

It is information.

Their system is telling us that something needs to change.

Don't Wait Until the Battery Reaches Zero

Perhaps one of the most important conversations we can have about burnout is not simply how do we recover from it?


It is:

How do we recognise it earlier?

What are your warning signs?

What drains your battery?

What restores it?

What sensory, emotional, physical and social demands are you carrying every day?

And where can you create small moments of recovery before your system reaches complete depletion?

Whether you have ADHD, are autistic, AuDHD or neurotypical, burnout can be incredibly debilitating.

But the way it presents — and what someone needs to recover — can be very different.

We need to become better at recognising those differences, listening to our bodies and brains, and creating lives that don't continually require us to operate beyond our capacity.

Because wellbeing shouldn't simply be about recovering enough to survive another week.

It should be about learning how to live in a way that allows us to thrive and flourish.
